Message from Antix Music Network RE; Coronavirus
The past week has been very challenging for Antix; with the likes of Abbey Hill and Yeovil Beer Fest postponing their events in the same week, we have been in big discussions about future Antix Events. After discussing the outbreak situation with venues, managers, artists and supporters, we have decided go ahead as planned with most Antix events, until we get to a point we have to stop; e.g. the Government banning live music events, lockdowns etc. We will continue to monitor the situation and government advice on how best to keep our artists and the public safe. Please be aware that events may have to be cancelled at the last minute. Any changes will be posted to the Antix Facebook, Instagram and website. Multi Artist Events - we advise artists to cancel, even if at short notice, and stay at home if they have a persistent cough, a high temperature, or have been in contact with anyone with Coronavirus in the past week. Open Mics - we ask musicians if they want to perform, but don’t want to use our equipment (especially microphones which are used by multiple artists per night), you are welcome to bring anything you wish - we will not take offence, and we actively encourage artists to bring their own equipment, especially microphones, where possible, and bring hand sanitizer and wash their hands regularly. At every Antix event; equipment, especially microphones, will be cleaned with antibacterial wipes between every artists performance. Hand Sanitiser will also be available if you have forgotten your own, but due to national shortages, please bring your own where possible.  PAUL: Hi Sharon, thanks for joining us for a chat. First things first... Welcome! Tell us a little about yourself, how did your music journey begin and what did you listen to when you were growing up?
SHARON: My music journey began with rock metal and alternative music, I always liked the Cure and the Cult along with Led Zeplin and Pink Floyd. Then I mellowed out and heard a friend playing Kate Bush one day and fell in love with her and she inspired me to start singing and writing while Tori Amos came later and inspired me to learn piano. Ive always liked unique female song writers like Joni Michelle and London Grammar is now a top favourite along with Aurora. I also love bands like Cold Play and Kean and of course Jeff Buckley is amazing too. PAUL: I must admit to being a Kate Bush fan but I found I didn't start to appreciate it until I was a little older! Your music influence is quite eclectic... Is there a certain style in the way you play or do you just see how things go? SHARON:Theres no set style apart from I use my own guitar tunings that suit my little fingers and voice. I just write what come out from the heart and it all just comes gushing out PAUL: You play the Piano and Guitar as well as sing, so you really do put the work in don't you! Are there any other instruments that you play or would like to learn? SHARON: I would have liked to learn how to play a bit of bass just for recording purposes as I produce all my own music in my home studio and midi bass just doesn't cut it! PAUL: You must have loads of music heroes/heroinnes but if we had to tie you down to choosing one to perform with, past or present, who would it be? SHARON: I would love to perform with Frankie goes to Hollywood singing my favourite all time song The Power of love and it would be awesome to perform with Cold Play live.. PAUL: Awesome..I love Coldplay too! So, bearing you music heroes in mind, you can choose 3 more people to have a joint night out with..who would you choose, where would you go and why? SHARON: I would love a night out with Jimmie Page Kate Bush and Jeff Buckley and I would take them to the Samoritz club in London its a little rock venue I used to go to when I lived in London. PAUL: You've been really busy this last year. Tell us what you have been up to and what your plans are for the next 12 months.. SHARON: I have to try and get my album finished this year and I will be bringing out a new and better EP. I also have my art exhibitions to be putting on to help pay for my musicians... PAUL: Well I know you said you were busy but WOW!..You have lots lined up! If you could collaborate with any artist at the moment, who would be your first go-to choice? SHARON: I guess Cold play would be a good one to club with at the moment... PAUL: So, when you arent submersed in your own music and production, who do you like to see locally? Do you have a favourite venue? SHARON: I like to go to a venue called the Spice of Life in Soho London and see new up and coming talent I guess. PAUL: If we could pick you up and drop you on any stage, anywhere, where would it be? SHARON: I would love to play at Glastonbury and the Royal Albert hall with a grand piano on stage would be awesome... PAUL: You've spent quite a bit of time on the music side of things, and we probably already know the answer to this question but is it your dream job or do you se yourself doing something else, or as well as something else in the future? SHARON: I will always put music first but will carry on painting and creating as an artist its just another form of expression of myself. PAUL: Well we hope you get the future you are after..before we let you go, is there anything else you would like to share with us? SHARON: I do have my first EP out called Time and Ive decided to release a second as that one was rushed and Im not completely happy with it. INTERVIEW - Guitarist On Wheels releases new single “Turn Down”, plus what to expect for 20203/4/2020  FRAZER; Hey Paul! Good to chat to you again; how’s things?
PAUL; Hey mate yea things are good thanks. FRAZER; You’ve been keeping fairly busy this new year; we’re only 3 months in (just) and you’ve released a new single, you’ve been on radio, and your video blogs have really taken off. Just tell the viewers of Antix what it is you’ve been up to in your own words; you must be feeling quietly confident for a good year ahead! PAUL; I’m definitely looking forward to 2020 and it’s been a really great start to this year. The vlogs are something new and although they are hard work I’m looking forward to them taking off a bit more. As usual it’ll be gigs galore this year and I’ll never complain at that. FRAZER; Obviously you performed on Air107.2 recently, and performed a bunch of your originals, which I really enjoyed; but the one you released recently was called “Turn Down”; what caught my eye is how you got loads of people involved in the artwork; where’s the inspiration for this? And what’s the story? PAUL; So myself and my girlfriend really enjoy watching a TV program called Catfish on MTV where they help people meet who they have been talking to online. Sometimes they are the person they say they are but more often than not they are someone different and have told many lies. In series 7 they had some guest co-hosts as one of the main hosts had decided to leave. During one of the episodes the girl said to the co-host that the person they were talking to always knew what to say and made her feel needed. The co-host replied with something along the lines of “but if you turn down the volume what’s left?” This made me think a lot about past relationships, friendships and conversations I have had with others. When someone stops talking do their actions meet what they’ve been saying? Some people’s don’t. A couple of days after watching this episode I was sat playing my guitar, half trying to write a song when the thought from that show came to my head and I found the start of the hook “Turn down the volume There’s nothing left for me” I then ended up writing the track from this. It’s one of my favourite songs to date and I spent a lot of time trying to get the sound right. This was also the first song I spent a lot of time working on the mixing and mastering. I then decided to get my friends involved and asked people to send me a picture of them with their finger over their mouth as if telling someone to be quiet. I added all the pictures I got together and made the cover for the single using this! FRAZER; That’s quite a story Paul - I really like that - it’s important there are songwriters out there who still write outside the box. I’m also really glad you’ve now mastered the track; when we first played it, it was a little quiet! But I must say it sounds great now! PAUL; Thanks, I listened to your feedback on some of my other stuff and wanted to make my music better quality. Luckily I seem to have got this one reasonably close first time. FRAZER; So we’re going to wrap things up for soon, but quickly, what can we expect from you in 2020? A birdy told me a collab album is on the cards? PAUL; Ahh yes, I’ve been trying to work on a collab album with some awesome musicians and friends. I’m being slightly selfish in hoping to pick up some tips and tricks around song writing. I’m also planning to work on a another album but I’ll possibly release them as individual songs and then the entire album when it’s ready. I love writing and releasing music so if I can find a way to get it to people’s ears quicker then bonus! FRAZER; Thanks a lot for chatting with me mate, and I’ll see you at a gig some time soon! PAUL; Thanks mate see you very soon! FRAZER; Hey James! It’s nice to catch up with you - there seems to be a lot to talk about - you’ve been busy! So, let’s start from the beginning - you are the founder of Kult DIY - what is that? JAMES; A while back there was a bit of an outcry for alternative events in Yeovil. People reminisced about times past when Yeovil’s ’scene’ flourished. But since the closure of many venues, the ‘scene’ dried up and it seemed like no one was going to take on running alternative shows so I thought I’d give it a go. I ignored off-putting opinions and created Yeovil Punk Collective, the idea was to put on punk shows drawing from contacts we’d made in the DIY punk scene and provide Yeovil with something a bit different. A few shows in I wanted to broaden the genres covered so the name changed to Kult DIY, a name that incapsulates my involvement in the UK’s DIY scene. Since then I’ve put on numerous events with Kult DIY at The Railway Hotel which has now become a central hub for the alternative music in Yeovil. FRAZER; You’ve also been quite a figure in upcoming original acts and bands in the Yeovil area, putting on events, what’s going on there? How did that all start? JAMES; When I first started putting on shows back in 2016, I did DIY house shows, where I’d book a few acoustic acts and have them play in my dining room. I then got involved with ‘Small Fry DIY Rolling Punk Circuit’ which was run by Alex from Wonk Unit. The idea was to create a UK touring circuit for lesser known acts to play. I agreed to put on house shows with acoustic acts but quickly realised there was much more demand for bands, so I started booking them at venues in town. From there I realised I could probably put on some more established acts. Things naturally morphed into Kult DIY, once again putting Yeovil on the map for alternative bands to play with the hopes of creating a ‘scene’ in Yeovil. FRAZER; The big thing I want to talk about is your petition - now for those that haven’t seen, you’ve already for 100+ people signing the petition you made to install a Live Music and Event’s Noticeboard in Yeovil - which I personally think is a great idea. Where did this idea come from? JAMES; Since starting the promoting stuff I’ve always tried to find ways of making people aware of my events. I use social media to a large extent and use more old school methods of flying but still people tell me they haven’t heard of any of the events I’m putting on. One of the methods I use is fly posting in certain areas in town and I think this is an effective way of advertising but the posters sometimes get ripped down and the areas are limited. I then thought what if there was a specific wall/area where all music events could be posted, a place everyone will see and then will be synonymous for knowing what’s going on. My influence for this are the drums they use in Exeter city centre where people poster events on, they’re very eye catching and you are instantly aware of what’s on there. I have messaged the council already here. I think this sort of board would be great for our music community, not just for knowing what’s going on but also bringing us all together. FRAZER; We’ll put the link to the petition at the bottom of this page, so people can get involved and help sign this really important petition. Like I’ve said you have been quite an important figure in Yeovil based bands and original artists especially - what are the things you think need changing in the area? JAMES; Back in the day, the Yeovil scene was heavily influenced by the colleges music department, so the students were very involved in the music scene. Since the music department was axed there has been a serious lack of youths getting involved in the music scene. Somehow this needs to change as I’m sure there’s plenty of great musicians or music lovers out there who would enjoy my events. Attendance is always a huge worry for me, no matter how great the act is there will always be a huge sketch if any people will turn up! Either people are unaware of the events or apathetic I don’t know but at least if the music events board is put up, this may reach more people’ A venture I’ve always wanted to do is start my own rehearsal studio as this is something that Yeovil lacks. This would give all musicians a place to develop and network. FRAZER; What can original artists and bands do to help get round the problems they face? JAMES; I think as we’re quite a small town and community we need to communicate with one and another. No matter what try to help each other out in whatever way we can, whether that’s coming to a show, sharing a post on facebook or organising an event, it’s best to unify then divide.
